All too often we come across failed change programmes or business improvement initiatives that have never gained traction, simply because the focus has all been on the actions needed to deliver the results desired. But to take this approach neglects the single most important factor in any business. The people.
To really drive sustainable improvement engagement is the key. There has been lots written on the subject but there’s one model that stands out to us. The Results Pyramid® from Tom Smith and Roger Connors’ book titled “Change the Culture, Change the Game” talks a lot about the impact of culture and the building blocks that are required to drive transformational change. It identifies the importance of focusing on harnessing, and sometimes changing, someone’s experiences and beliefs in order to drive a different set of actions that ultimately lead to a change in the results being delivered.
This echoes our own results philosophy that has delivered time after time – focus as much on the heart as you do the head; get the two working together. The emotional and rational, logic and feeling, play an equally crucial role in how we do things as individuals. So, it makes sense to address both when you’re trying to affect a change. But that doesn’t mean it’s easy!
Giving someone new experiences that impact on their beliefs is harder than just creating a new process. Just like creating the right culture within your business to drive fresh action is more difficult than simply putting together an action plan. But for organisations that are serious about sustainable change, we know it’s the only way. And so, we’ve spent a considerable number of years championing this approach and applying it to the work we do across the different projects and programmes we’ve worked on, in every sector we touch.
